Ankara Castle stands high on a rocky hill looking over the city of Ankara. It is the oldest part of Turkey’s capital city. This grand fortress tells the story of many empires. No one knows exactly when the first walls were built. Many historians believe the Phrygians started it in the 8th century BC. After them, the Galatians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans all used the castle.

Each empire changed the fortress to fit their needs. When you look closely at the walls, you can see this history.
